Happy 90th Birthday Ma’am

Queen Elizabeth II is 90 years old today. Our longest serving monarch has been a remarkable point of consistency and continuity in a fast changing world.

Six months before her Coronation, Elizabeth asked the people of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth to:

Pray that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.

Since then she has carried out her duties tirelessly, with great humility and dignity.  On the BBC website you can find ninety photos commemorating her 90 years – from her childhood to the present day.

The Queen is Head of the Church of England and attends Church weekly. I often wondered if this part of her role was a ‘duty’ and if the references to God her speeches were the token ones expected of her.  But, over the past few decades in particular, Queen Elizabeth has left us in no doubt of her personal, long held, Christian faith:

For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life.  (Christmas 2014)

His death might have been the end of the story, but then came the resurrection and with it the foundation of the Christian faith. (Christmas 2000)

Christians have the compelling example of the life and teaching of Christ and, for myself, I would like nothing more than that my grandchildren should hold dear his ideals which have helped and inspired so many previous generations. (1978)

If you would like to share with people more about The Queen’s reign and her faith a book has been published with a forward by Her Majesty called ‘The Servant Queen and the King she serves’.

From the backcover: ‘This beautifully illustrated tribute focuses on the Queen’s own words to draw out the central role of her trust in Jesus Christ in shaping her life and work, offering us an inspiring, multi-faceted insight into a a life well lived for others’. Copies can be purchased for just £1.08, it is beautifully put together and has been produced as a book to gift.

I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad.  Each day is a new beginning.  I know that the only way to live my life is to try and do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God… I draw strength from the message of hope in the Christian gospel.  (Queen Elizabeth II, Christmas 2002)

About allisonreidnem

New Every Morning – About Me Hi! I’m Allison, an obsessive patchwork-quilter who has no desire to be cured! I’ve been developing my skills and knowledge by paying attention at my local quilting group and by putting my questions into the computer search engine. I’m so grateful to the generous people who have taken the time to share their knowledge with me in person, via YouTube videos or their blogs. I’m intending my blog to be a link into the worldwide patchwork and quilting community and a means to contribute helpful hints and inspiration as I continue to discover more about this addictive craft. So, why ‘New Every Morning Patchwork and Quilting’? Well! I am a morning person! I often wake in the wee small hours and think through design and quilt construction issues. My woolly–headed evening brain finds such issues far too difficult to resolve! If I’m disciplined enough to be asleep by 10pm, I can be up cutting, piecing, pressing and quilting before sunrise! By the time daily family routine kicks-in I’ve had a satisfying, soul-feeding creative fix. (I should mention that ‘family at home’ is: my patient, faithful husband of 27years; and our equally patient 16 year old son, who acts as our in-house IT support complete with sighs and rolling eyes! Older daughter and son have both recently flown the nest). Not only do I find early mornings my creative time I also find it a time for receiving spiritual nourishment. I often find myself humming a gentle chorus and reflecting on God’s constancy as another new day dawns. ‘The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is thy faithfulness, O Lord, Great is thy faithfulness.’ Edith McNeil’s chorus is based on verses from the Bible – Lamentations 3: 21-23.

Thank you! I really enjoyed the photos and then watched the BBC documentary ‘Elizabeth at 90 – a family tribute’. Really good to celebrate strong family ties over so many years, and lovely footage too. Happy birthday Ma’am!
